Hello everyone. This is Link. If you've never met me, I live in a cottage on the edge of Flavo, near the woods. It's the one with the large fire pit in the front. Please come and say hello any time.

Anyway, I have used the ink given to us recently to create a map of the "world." I asked for it to include as much of our surroundings as possible, including beyond the woods.

Looks like the woods extend very, very far around the town, but they do eventually end. Past that are plains, and to the north beyond that are hills. To the northeast, the hills rise into mountains. And... that's it. That's all it shows. I'm not sure whether it's because I ran out of ink, or because that's all there is.

I've brought the map to the library in Flavo and put it up on the wall. I'm going to spend the day in the library myself, making copies of it to give out to whoever wants one. Please come by to take a look or get a copy for yourself.

Does anyone have any ideas for names for the plains, hills and mountains?

It looks like this world extends far beyond our little forest, it's just a matter of getting out of it that makes it complicated.

I wonder if anyone has ever made it past the woods. I haven't heard of anyone managing it since I've been here, but I know there are people who've been here longer than me...

I don't think I've met Shiho. Could you introduce us? She'd probably do a much better job making copies than me.

If anyone out there has named anything on the map, it's not much use to us until we ever meet them.

Yeah, that's unfortunately very true. But maybe we will, anyway. Meet them, that is.

Hi! This is great news, knowing what our immediate surroundings are like is better in the long-term.

I'm standing right in front of the map, making copies, so I don't think I'll be easy to miss... but I've also got a sword and shield, and I'm a Hylian, so I have long ears. Please come by today whenever you like!

Great! I have a floating right arm, in case that helps you spot me.

[ Altean. His brain immediately connects "long ears" with Space Elves, so that's who he goes in search of; and he isn't surprised to see Link there looking as pretty as Allura or Romelle. Shiro approach with a polite nod, glancing over the map with something like relief. ]

Hi, I'm Shiro. You've done an amazing job on this, Link.

[Link hears someone approaching him from behind, so he sets his ink brush down and looks over his shoulder.

Huh... he wasn't lying. That sure is a floating arm. Link can't help but stare at it for a few seconds; after realizing he's being rude, he stands up and clears his throat.]

It's a pleasure to meet you, Shiro. [This human is much taller than Link, but that goes for a lot of the people here. He gestures towards the large map on the wall and steps aside.]

You think so? All I did was ask for something with the ink and paper.

[ His smile is encouraging as he looks the map over, fascinated by what might lie beyond the forest in the plains between there and the mountains. ]

It's more than anyone here has ever managed, I'll say that. With a copy of this we could explore and see if anything or anyone is out there besides us.

Hm... maybe. [Link puts his fingertips to his chin and looks up at the map.] As far as I know, we still don't have a way to get past the forest. And the paths and ponds change their placement and directions too often to try to make a map of it.

[Not even the map Link created with the magic ink shows any roads outside the town itself.]

I wonder if it's all as empty as this map makes it look, though.

[ That would explain why Shiro finds it hard to seek out his fishing pond from week to week, he isn't going mad, the damn thing is moving. Coupled with the growth of the overall forest ... ]

I think the woods have a sentience we're not aware of, that's why no one can get through. Communicating with them might be worth a shot if it lets us get anywhere on this map beyond the northern treeline, even if there's nothing there.

[ Arms folding, he sets his jaw and frowns at the map. ]

These houses belonged to someone. We shouldn't give up on the people whose town we've taken over, we owe it to them to at least understand what happened to Chroma's population. Without their homes, we'd be at the mercy of those woods.

Communicating with the woods?

[There's a suggestion he's never heard before, but would that even be possible? Link frowns, remembering that a few residents killed a "forest guardian" a while back. That's still bothering him, and he doubts it would make talking to the woods any easier.

As for the townspeople... he glances up at the tall human.] Mm, well. We've seen ghosts of the past townsfolk before. I don't think they're gone for a good reason.

[ Perking up with visual interest, he looks from the map to Link. ]

You've seen their ghosts?

Only once. [He nods, his expression only turning slightly grim. He looks back down at the map as he copies.] Every once in a while, strange things happen here, and that's what happened one time. They didn't react to anything we said or did - the just went about their business as if it were a normal day in their lives.

When was that? [ He has ... a few questions. ] What did they look like? What were they wearing? When did they disappear, how long ago?

[ Grabbing a chair to drag over Shiro sits at Link's side, all the better to be somewhere closer to eye-to-eye although they still aren't; it's an improvement from peering straight down. ]

Sorry, I'm just ... curious.

Oh, uh... [He glances at Shiro yet again, and then spends a moment blinking, trying to think.] It was a few months ago, I think. They were dressed in plain peasant clothes... they were only here for a short while and then they were gone again.

[Link sits back thoughtfully, and maybe also to politely put some distance between himself and Shiro's looming form.]

I think we've known for longer than that that there used to be people living here, though.

[ Deep in thought, it isn't until Link starts to lean away that Shiro notices how he's towering in, even seated, and sinks back in his chair to give the guy some space. ]

Yeah, the houses don't exactly look unlived in. It's a little weird to set up your home in someone else's space.

This is wonderful. Thank you for using your ink this way. I'm afraid I don't have suggestions for names, but it is nice to see what there is beyond the forest.

I wonder what else lives out there?

I wonder that, too. The map is devoid of any landmarks or places of interest beyond the town. I wonder if that's because I ran out of ink, or if it's because there's really nothing out there.

Worlds are vast. Even if this one lacks its colors, it must still hold more. We have a limited amount of ink, so that would be my thought.

Even if your map were complete, we can still make new discoveries.

I think there is always something new to learn. It's just a matter of how you look at things.

That's a good perspective to have, although I still wonder if it applies to the map and anything else being out there. Are you a scholar?

Oh, no, I'm nothing like that. I simply believe hope is better to have than despair.

At least for me personally, I don't know if I would have lasted as long as I have otherwise.

[ Considering that someone’s planning on building the ship, it seemed wise to procure a map of the regions beyond known boundaries. Thus he’s presented himself in the library shortly after Link’s announcement, looking a little wistful as he stares up at the map on the wall. ]

This realm is certainly very large, isn’t it?

[Link is busying himself with making a copy of the map for the dashing man. He glances up at the original when he speaks and smiles.]

If we assume the map is to scale, then yes. But, it doesn't have a scale, so... I wonder how big or small it is, really.

[ And he’s very grateful, since he’d clean run out of ink seeking out one specific spot on that map. Was it truly worth it in the end…? Only time will tell. ]

I suspect it might be larger still. There is a harbor here, after all…one cannot help but wonder if ships from far-off lands have visited here in gentler waters.

I wonder that, too. I haven't heard of anyone ever seeing signs of life on the water's horizon, but perhaps in the past...

[He studies the map again. The ocean must extend farther than this, right?]

How far must we sail, before we come to the world’s edge, I wonder.

[ By now he’d already discarded the medieval idea that the world was flat, but this place certainly doesn’t operate by the rules he knows. ]

I suppose we will know soon enough, once Lupin finishes construction on his boat.

Oh, are you involved in that? I'd offered to help with labor earlier.

[Link dabs his quill into the inkwell and continues copying. He's not particularly good at drawing, but when the map is so sparse, it doesn't matter too much.]

I hope it's not in vain. They might be turned back towards the shore, the same way the woods does when we're on foot.

[ Sparse might be better, anyway. Tristan certainly has every intention of filling in the gaps with further expeditions into the forest. But for now… ]

Yes, that is a possibility…it might even be the most merciful one. How sad…

[ Real perky, this one. ]

[Link chuckles, but it's a nervous chuckle, out of obligation. That's grim. And his commentary strikes him as sort of odd. "How sad"? Of course that would be sad.

Link focuses on the map.]

...Do you plan to sail on the boat yourself when it's done?

Yes, I do.

[ That chuckle doesn’t bother him, though it does make him recall a certain memory—one from his early days in Chroma. ]

But I wonder…were you also inclined to sailing in Hyrule?

I’d like a copy if you’ve still got the time.

[Link knows this hex code is familiar but he can't place the person at the moment.]

Of course. I've got nothing else to do for now, at any rate. Please come to the library to get one.

Great. I'm on my way.

[He shuts his laptop and grabs his shoes and a small notebook before heading over to meet Link at the library. He wasn't sure what to expect from a map of the greater world, but by the sounds of it there wasn't a whole lot to expect.

Entering the building at last, Nyx scans the room for Link.]

[Link is sitting by the far wall, an inkwell and a stack of large papers in front of him. He waves goodbye to someone as they leave with a fresh copy of the map; as he does, he notices the man near the door, searching the room with his eyes.

That must be someone here for a copy. He raises his free hand to wave, and after dipping a quill into the inkwell, turns back to the tabletop while he walks over.]
