It appears that as a group we've all generally agreed to utilize this forum as a means of sharing relevant information with each other and pooling collectively our experiences as we grow acclimated to our new circumstances, so in a similar vein — a few questions, if you will.

1) Has anything verifiably edible (and safe for consumption) been found in the wilds surrounding this town?

2) Has anyone yet identified a foodstuff that isn't altogether flavorless?

As talented as I am, I don't think I have the ability to make ashy food more palatable.

Not quite. My close friend's something of a master chef, though, so I've picked up a thing or two from him - just enough to get by. Which is the problem, in this case. If he were here, I'm sure he could fix our food problems.

Alternatively, there's always the solution of using ice to numb one's taste buds prior to consumption of the rest of the meal. A dulled sense of taste might make the ashy flavor more palatable, blasphemous though it might be toward the sensibilities of anyone who cares anything about food.

Does that really work? I've never heard of it before.

It's no different than using ice to numb anything else, really. The principle is the same — when cold, the ability to sense is dulled temporarily. No different than numbing an ear with ice before piercing it, for example.

Of course, but to apply that to eating - how bizarre! Have you done it? I'm afraid to know the circumstances.

Not personally, but I've utilized it with others. Typically to help them acclimate to the consumption of something bitter, or to a taste they otherwise found unpleasant.

I've been in the acquaintance of a number of picky eaters, over the years.

Are you some sort of chef, then? Or perhaps a doctor, trying to coerce a patient into trying some nasty medicine?
