This is Lt. Colonel Guren Ichinose of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. I don't expect that to mean anything to any of you, but if it can make anyone take me a little more seriously, then I'll take it.

I'm sure you all saw the illustration of those apparent shadow monsters. If there are dangers, it means we should be ready for them, and somehow I've run into a surprising few people who have enough experience in combat. Some of them don't have any at all.

Would any of you be interested in learning how to fight? To defend yourselves? What about the capable out there— are you willing to teach, or spar to improve yourselves? Let me know, and I can set something up for regular practicing.

(OOC: Basically, I thought it might be fun to encourage more random CR with both characters who would like to learn how to fight, and characters who already know how and are willing to teach or spar! If there's enough interest, I can throw up an ooc post with match up sort of things that can provide a semi-regular chance for new CR (via threading or handwaving). Let me know in your tag, or via PM if your character won't tag the post!

Edit: I put up an ooc sign up! Please remember to sign up there if you'd like your character to be included in some fighting (and friendship) styled pair ups!)

i can try to teach? i don't have swords though, just hammers. but i could help with sparring and teaching kind of like a human test dummy or something.

Teaching doesn't necessarily mean you have to wield the same weapons or even be stronger than your opponent. There's plenty you can offer, if you're willing.

Hammers are a pretty unique weapon. What would you say your strengths are?

yeah. i mean yeah, i am definitely willing! it's been a few days and now that there are shadow monsters (??) it would not hurt to teach other people and get practice in myself.

you mean besides wielding hammers in the first place? [Haha. Shut up, John.] one-hit knockouts. dodging. and definitely controlling momentum! with my hammer it is actually pretty big? so i've had practice not overbalancing and falling on my ass.

So you hit hard enough that you can knock people out in one blow? That's pretty good. Where did you learn to fight?

cool, then definitely count me in.

but yeah, once i upgraded and got better with my swings it was really easy. i mean i think the hammer i have now is also just pretty powerful but that aside i can do that. but i guess i just kind of taught myself. we had to know how to fight once we entered the game and stuff so i got in a lot of practice beating up the monsters around my house.

it's been three years since then.

So you had to learn to survive. That's one of the quickest ways to pick up a skill, but take it for granted and you can easily slip.

What's the game?

exactly. to all of that, i guess. we all kind of had to figure stuff out.
well ok no two of my friends already knew how to use swords and firearms but we still had to apply the game mechanics to it once we were in the medium.

it's a game called sburb. my friends and i started playing it that long ago.

[Well Guren's in for a fun time because guess who also doesn't understand Homestuck?]

it was sort of a video game at first. we all got client and server discs that we had to install and get everything up and running but after that when we got into the medium it became a lot more real. so we started learning to fight and upgrading our weapons and going through the gates and stuff.

i started out with a normal hammer but now i have this big thing that i alchemized a little while ago. my sister stopped using her rifle all together for a little while when she got her powers though.

So... it's a mess you didn't really sign up for. You thought you could play pretend but it turned out to be real. Like that? And your sister was involved, too?

yeah. something like that. that is the best way to explain it, i think.
my sister and our two best friends who are also siblings.

[Nts: leave out that nobody knew they were related prior to the game.]

i have hammers, my sister has guns, my best friend has swords, and my other best friend has knitting needles.

I guess I'll mostly have to take your word for it, but not many of our worlds make sense to each other. Everyone's bugging me about the army now.

Still, knitting needles. That's a new one. Are any of them here?

yeah i wasn't sure how to ask about that? but i think i do not really have room to talk about weird world mechanics, haha.

knitting needles! which might have been my fault because i gave her knitting supplies for her birthday, but it worked out. the girls aren't here, but dave is. he's the sword guy.

So you were being polite? Haha. I'm not a demon, and we don't fight demons, but there's a demon sealed in my sword. I can borrow her strength, so I'm far stronger than your average human.

Oh, Dave. Right, I talked to him over the forum like this. Who do you think is stronger, you or him?

seriously? dude that's cool! i mean i think that's cool? demons are usually bad but also that kind of sounds more like you tamed one and are working with her so that is definitely cool.

that doesn't surprise me. dave talks a lot. but definitely me. he's faster though.

[Thanks, he thinks it'd be pretty rad if the demon wasn't his dead ex lover, too!! That's something.]

I wouldn't call it tamed. The only reason a demon works with a human is because they have the chance to take over their body. If a human has weak will or lacks resolve, they could easily be completely taken over. It's a dangerous thing.

So you think you're stronger physically, but would his speed help him win a fight, or do you still have it in the bag?

ok see now it just sounds bad all over again. except for the part where you still look very human and not possessed so congratulations on that.

[There's a pause though and even though Guren can't see when there's a pause, there's a delay in reply. Speed usually would help Dave win a fight, but it occurs to him that it obviously didn't last time. And that's kind of a shitty thing to think about.]

if he's against me? it also depends if we get to use our aspects or not. but speed might give him just a little bit of an edge if he dodges fast enough.

[A grim silence on that first part because of Canon Reasons and angst, but it's fine. It's all good.]

Aspects... Does that have anything to do with his time travel thing?

It doesn't matter. With or without, you're hesitating on giving me an answer. Does that mean you're equal, or are you just afraid to say you'd kick his ass?

yeah, we all have them. he's the only one of the four of us who can really time travel though.

i haven't seen him or fought with him for three years, but we're equal. without a doubt.

[They are definitely two dudes who have had good lives without any interruptions of craziness that caused their whole worlds to change, yep. Having a good time.]

wind! well breath, technically, but it is basically wind. dave has time, i have breath, and the girls had light and space.
it is how i've been clearing the dust out of some of the buildings around here.

haha. well even if i cannot get rid of people (nice try) i am definitely getting bored here so sure. i don't mind. it gives me something else to do.
