This is Lt. Colonel Guren Ichinose of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. I don't expect that to mean anything to any of you, but if it can make anyone take me a little more seriously, then I'll take it.

I'm sure you all saw the illustration of those apparent shadow monsters. If there are dangers, it means we should be ready for them, and somehow I've run into a surprising few people who have enough experience in combat. Some of them don't have any at all.

Would any of you be interested in learning how to fight? To defend yourselves? What about the capable out there— are you willing to teach, or spar to improve yourselves? Let me know, and I can set something up for regular practicing.

(OOC: Basically, I thought it might be fun to encourage more random CR with both characters who would like to learn how to fight, and characters who already know how and are willing to teach or spar! If there's enough interest, I can throw up an ooc post with match up sort of things that can provide a semi-regular chance for new CR (via threading or handwaving). Let me know in your tag, or via PM if your character won't tag the post!

The catastrophe?

I've talked to enough people whose worlds sound vastly different than the Earth I know. I've been to an alternate reality before, and this seems right up that alley.

A virus that took out so much of the human population that only one tenth remains. Everyone over a certain age died, essentially.

You’ve been to one before? That’s new. I guess it must come with space travel.

Uh. Right. So people should remember that, if they're from the same reality.

It was new as hell to me when it happened too. But yeah, space travel and getting caught in an intergalactic alien war has... all sorts of weird fringe benefits.

At first yeah, but after a while I think your threshold for weird just readjusts itself.

Anyway, thanks for putting this together. I think it's important. No one should be stuck defenseless here; we don't know what's going to wind up happening.

But I've got a bad feeling about this place.

I'd be worried about anyone who didn't. If the lack of color is changing even the taste of things like I'm assuming, then there's a lot more going on than we know.

That and no sign of what happened to who used to live here. And no idea if whatever happened to the color is still happening, if it'll happen to us. And what that will mean.

You two running into literal shadows in the forest made me wonder about that even more. Maybe they weren't always like that.

You mean they might be some of the people who used to live here? I thought that too.

Dave and I managed to steal some books. But they're blank-looking. We thought maybe the ink's color had faded. But there might still be some way to read them.

I thought the same when I found some papers and books in some of the housing around here. Did you steal from wherever those shadows were, then? It's good to hold onto them. It's likely there's a way we can make the words appear, even if the paper aged darker and the ink faded, just like you're saying.

At least you've got a good head on your shoulders. It was risky going deeper into the forest with just the two of you, though.

Yeah, Dave grabbed as much as he could in his... fancy... magic... carrying. Thing. I don't exactly get it, but he carried a bunch out.

Risky, yeah. But at the time there was no knowing that. And honestly, it's better if fewer people were put in harm's wave. It's bad enough Dave got hurt too.

More people might have offered a tactic we haven't thought of for dealing with them. They have some sort of weakness; we just don't know it yet. Don't treat yourselves like protectors and go alone. Everyone around here should be your friends. Rely on them, too.

Or more people could have wound up with a higher body count.

I'm not against teamwork. I'm sort of all for it. And you're right. There are probably some people with skills that could be the deciding factor in a fight. But sometimes throwing more people at something just ends up hurting more people. And unfortunately we don't even know what or where might be dangerous until it turns out to be, in this place. It's like a minefield.

[The commander side of him wants to argue. To discuss and share knowledge— that life isn't just like some shogi board. Keith has very important points, but Guren has been through all of them, and his opinion has shifted in very different ways. There were times when fewer people were necessary... that's right. But he's just not sure that was one of them.

However, the truth is he doesn't know a thing about how it went down, even with having it explained to him, so he can't argue to begin with. It all depends on the moment, on the reasoning, on what's going on.]

Good thing there wasn't a body count. Just don't go throwing yourselves out there like you're heroes for dying. As long as you focus on living on top of keeping everyone around you safe, it's fine.

Dying is nothing heroic; I know that one pretty well.

[Sure he's currently convinced he's either dead already or destined to die a few seconds after he winds up back where he belongs, but he'll leave that unsaid. He's kind of done thinking about that. While he's here, he's alive. He can do something about whats going on here. That's what counts.]

But I'm also not going to back down just because something is dangerous. I'll admit I don't always weigh all my options before jumping in though. I'm working on that.

Good. All of that is good to realize.

Yeah, a friend. And my leader.

Well. He was anyway, before I left Voltron. He's still their leader. And the couldn't ask for better.

[Shiro is worlds better at it than Keith had been trying to fill his shoes. But for all that Keith's been really blunt and open with most things about himself, he's got a whole mess of insecurities he doesn't talk about. And that is a big one.]
