Considering the mention of shadows in some of the previous posts, I was curious to know how many of you are knowledgeable about the studies of the psychiatrist Carl Jung and his own theories on the matter.
[Clearly there's nothing special about this query, right.]

Whether the previous residents here were people might depend on whether you're defining that as "human," or as something more broad. The town at least seems to be set up in ways that would be convenient to bipedal human-like people, so I think we can at least assume they're probably closer to us than, like...octopuses or something.
How figuratively are you speaking, about these Shadows? It seems like with your phrasing, it could go either way.

That is my thought as well...even the clothing we found, as tattered as it was seemed to indicate human-like creatures lived here before, and the doors around the average size of a human being. However their physoligy could be different. They might even have had shape-shifting abilities for all we know.
In my world, it could be taken literally. Someone overtaken by their selves could be dominated by them and cause far more trouble before they were stopped. I cannot know how an entire town was abandoned, but the fact that even the boats are hear mean they may have had to leave by the only other place we know so far...the forest.

Shape-shifters that either defaulted to a humanoid shape, or found it most convenient, for whatever reason, in that case. But that's probably a bit much to speculate on until we have a definite reason to do so.
The forest doesn't end anywhere in sight, either. If they left that way, they had a long journey ahead of them.
