Hey, I like a good bonfire. Burning one's belongs can be cathartic and something about a bonfire that says PARTY.

But yeah, doing it someplace near the water is probably a smart idea.

there's a spot down by the water where there's no half a bridge or anything, just gray sand

Sand is good. Non-combustible. So long as you avoid anything that could possibly catch fire, you'll be fine.
