Everyone,

I know a lot of people are worried about being here rather than home, so I wanted to share something I had learned recently. I was sent back to where I'm from, and as soon as I arrived, it was like I had never left. The man I was traveling with didn't even realize I had been gone, and so far as I could tell, even though six months passed here, it was only a few moments at the most in Columbia. However, it doesn't hold true for the opposite. Obviously, I'm back now, but I did leave here for a few days.

In case you're worried about being here, I hope this helps you rest at least a little more easily. It's definitely possible to go back.

Also, if you're feeling homesick, there's something I might be able to do. It's complicated to explain (though I certainly can if you want the explanation), but I can create portals to other worlds. However, before you ask, we can't use them to leave Chroma, since that's too dangerous. But I do want to get better at controlling where I can open them to so that maybe this could be possible eventually. Showing people how their homes are doing feels like a better way to practice than just opening random ones over and over again. If you'd like that, please let me know. It's something I can at least try.

I just want to get a few specific details down, if you don't mind me asking some questions?

Not at all. I know that it's a lot to take in, so I don't mind.

It can be hard to understand, though, just to warn you. I can do my best to explain, but at a certain point, I don't even really know how or why it works.

I'll try to be as concise as I can.

When you say you can show us a portal to our "home", is there a limit to what you can see? Worlds are large and wide. If I asked to see a nation I've never been to before, would that be possible?

To be honest, I don't know. Being able to do this much is still fairly new for me. It's kind of why I wanted to practice.

But at least theoretically, maybe. It depends on how much you know about that place. The way I can open the Tears is usually because I need or want something, and it's like the Tear is able to fulfill that in some way. It's not always direct, but there's a connection. So my idea for this to work is that people would have to tell me about their home, and maybe a lot about it. I know I want to show them their home, but it would be very lucky for me to open up a Tear on that alone.

Does that makes sense?

It does make sense, in its own odd sort of way.

So it's connected to what you want or need. And in this sense, you "want" to help people see their homes, so that's how it would go?

Right. That's my theory, at least. The way I used to be able to use them was much more random, but I've gotten better at controlling them recently.

If nothing else, it wouldn't hurt. Most of the time when I open Tears here, I just see other Chromas.

Can you see people in these Tears, including the other Chromas?

In places that aren't Chroma, absolutely. Chroma itself seems to be strange, though. Most of the time, I don't see anyone. They're colorless towns, or the colors are different from what they are here. But rarely (I've seen it twice), I do find a village that's full of people. It has all its colors back, and it seems normal, honestly.

This is probably a moot point, but just to be sure - they can't see or hear us, correct?

They can, actually. The Tear works both ways, so just like you could see them, they could see us. I try not to talk to people, though. It just doesn't seem like a good idea.

You could, but they might not understand. For one, if what I experienced is representative for everyone, then they don't even know you're gone.

Do you not want to go back? Or do you just mean that you think that leaving here would be difficult?

But I can definitely try. It might take a while, but if you can tell me about your home, I think I would get to it eventually.

Sorry that I misunderstood. In that case, that's also part of why using my Tears to try and leave is a bad idea. Besides something interfering with them, they're one way only. If you go through them, you can't come back. And I don't have any guarantee it's the exact same world you left from. Not yet, anyways.

I'd need more than that. "Modern" doesn't really mean much to me. It's 1912 where I'm from, so modern is rather relative. But another way to consider it is more personal. I think I might get a better sense if you describe it as why you want to go back there.

Right. And if you're in the "wrong" universe, then it has side effects. Potentially severe ones. But that's not a worry here, since at least I know that now.

I know a lot of people from around that time, so it's not a surprise. I should have said I was from a long time ago first, but it's easy to forget. I've seen many times and worlds, but mine still feels like the "right" one, somehow. It's strange how that works.

Fairly personal, honestly. But if you don't want to talk about it here, we can talk in person, assuming you're interested in me trying. Writing it all out is probably harder than just saying it.

Is it dangerous to create the portals at all?

It's the least I can do. Like I said, I want to practice, so I though practicing in a way that helps others would at least be a better use of that time.

It's not dangerous, not really. I'll get tired if I open many of them in a short time, but it just means I have to rest for a bit. It's only dangerous if you start to go through them.

Just out of curiosity, what happens when you try to go through them? Not that I'm going to try or anything!

I can bring you something to eat if you're planning on opening a lot of these portals. It sounds like you'll need the energy.

It depends, and I've still been kind of leaning about it, but it's definitely not good. It's more a theory of mine, but think of it this way: in a hundred million universes, you probably exist in some of them. Maybe even many. If you step into one of those worlds, you already exist there, so the person you would have been there combines with the person you already are. I've seen it make strange combinations of memories where you remember things that you didn't experience, but the other you did. I've also seen it make something horrible where that other you is dead.

I would appreciate that, if you don't mind. Food does usually seem to help.

So on top of different worlds, like the ones we all come from, there are also alternate universes where other versions of us exist. It definitely sounds risky trying to go back home that way. You couldn't be sure that you're going back to the same universe you came from, would you?

Okay, I'll make sure to stop by a few times! When do you think you'll start?

Right. I've been to one where I friend of mine was a revolutionary, but the one I know couldn't be farther from that. It seems like the more different the two versions of "you" are, the more severe the side effects are too. It's why even though I was thinking I might be able to help people go home before, now, I'm not so sure. I don't know if there's a way for me to be certain that the universe I'm picking would be the right one, after all.

Maybe an hour or so? I usually practice by the forest so that it doesn't bother people.

Even if you can't send people home this way, it's still generous of you to show people their homes through the portals. We'll find another, safer way to get everyone back where they belong.

It's a title. Essentially it's somebody who can open portals and send people through them.

Then no, not really. People shouldn't go through the portals that I make. It's too dangerous.

Is that because of Chroma's magic interfering with your own. Have you ever made portals you can go through?

It's that, partially. Chroma definitely pushes people out of my Tears if they try and go through them, but more than that, it's just just not a good idea even if that weren't the case. I can go through them without a problem, but that's just not true for others.

Have you had a lot of practice with them at home as well?

You're welcome. I know almost everyone wants to go home, so I didn't want to keep that to myself. Especially since I've heard of some people that are in the middle of very important things.

I don't mind at all. I know it sounds impossible, so I would be curious too. But just to say so up front, there are some questions you might ask that I don't know the answer to (though I certainly would like to know). I really do mean it if I have to say "I don't know."

Other than that, how familiar are you with physics? In particular, quantum physics.

yeah that does seem to be a thing for a lot of people. which is kind weird in and of itself now i think about it
so knowing that we got some kinda "months inside, seconds outside" deal going on is totally a weight off

anyway i'm not like SUPER familiar. i mean i've done the sorta physics they make you do in school and watched a couple documentaries on Discovery, but you know. quantum physics is stuff like Schrodinger's cat, right?

It is. It's probably wishful thinking, but I at least like to think of it as a break. I was also in the middle of something both times I've been pulled here, but I'm definitely happier to be here.

Maybe? I'm not familiar with that example, but just for reference, I might not be familiar with a lot of them. Where I'm from, it's 1912.

But the basis of it all is the multidimensional theory. There are an infinite amount of worlds, but some of them are only different in small ways. Just one event is different, and it could cause a small change that only effects a single life, or a larger one that changes that world's history. They all exist together, but completely separate from each other. The Tears create a hole in between them. I think a window is the best metaphor, but it's really a door, since you could go through if you wanted.

There's another person that can manipulate the Tears where I'm from, but she discovered it scientifically. It's the Observer Effect, where an atom she observed was also being observed by an alternate version of herself, so she was able to communicate with them and eventually create a Tear to unite them.

Mine isn't quite that, since it's just something I've been able to do as long as I can remember. But it's a sort of wish-fulfillment for me. If I really want something and open a Tear, there's a good chance that Tear will open to whatever I'm looking for. It's not scientific at all, but I think somehow, intuitively, I have some kind of direction to know what I'm opening. I'm still trying to figure out just what that is, but I think it's related to what the Luteces discovered with the Observer Effect.

tho i think it also sounds a lot like what you're talking about!! it's like a thought experiment where you got a cat in a sealed box with something that could kill it if activated. and until you open the box and actually observe the cat, after a while it's both alive and dead at the same time.
because of superpositioning or something like that?
but one of the ways to look at it goes into many-worlds theory and says that once you open the box to observe the cat it splits off into two separate branches instead of just collapsing into one. like what you said about events changing

so you're saying if two different versions of the same person in different universes study a particular thing at the exact same time that that somehow connects them
like going back to the cat
if the person from the alive-cat universe and the person from the dead-cat universe were observing their version of the cat at the exact same time across universes, that creates some kinda connection between the two seperate branches or something?
and your whole thing with being able to make Tears is like... if you were in the dead-cat universe and you wanted the cat to be alive, you can make that connection to the one where it IS just by wanting a universe where that exact same cat is alive badly enough.

Hello, Lottie. I should have mentioned it when we were in the maze, but I didn't want to ruin it. I don't know if scary is the right word, but I didn't want to go back to Columbia. One minute I was here in Chroma, and the next, I was back there. A lot happened in between me coming back, but none of it was good, honestly.

If you don't mind, I'd like to try. I think it would be helpful if I knew more about where you're from, since I think it might give me a better sense of where I'm opening the Tears, in a way. It's hard to explain.
